Joe Hill’s LOCKE & KEY Comes To Hulu From BATES MOTEL’s Carlton Cuse

This is tremendously exciting news. LOCKE & KEY is one of those incredible horror related properties that’s been screaming for a proper live adaptation. And it’s come close in the past! But we’ve never publicly seen those results. Now, perhaps because of the popularity of shows like STRANGER THINGS, coupled with the success of a few Stephen King adaptations for Hulu, this seems like a great time (and fit) for it to finally get it’s due.

Written by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son) and illustrated by Gabriel Rodríguez, LOCKE & KEY revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them. It was published by IDW Publishing and spanned 7 story-arcs, all of which you can check out in graphic novel form.

I remember a few years back, a friend lent me all the graphic novels to read while I was traveling and I burned through all of them pretty quickly. I was also able to see the original unreleased 2011 pilot directed by Mark Romanek during my FEARnet days (where we flirted with airing it there), and while it was good, it seemed to condense a lot of the material over the first full story arc into one episode. If this upcoming iteration is done right, this could be some terrific, much talked about television. And with this team, I think we’re in for a treat.

Deadline reports that Hulu has green-lit the pilot which was written by Hill and Carlton Cuse, fresh off his 5 season stint on BATES MOTEL, and with SINISTER and DOCTOR STRANGE director Scott Derrickson helming the first episode, and potentially more episodes should it go to full season. (Please, please, please!)

We’ll keep you posted on when you this goes into production and when you’ll be able to see it! In the meantime, the comics get my strongest recommendation. Check ’em out!
