I’m always fascinated by long-lost horror projects, although the case with this one is rather unique. THE EVIL WITHIN wasn’t exactly lost. It just was never completed. (Until now!) The behind-the-scenes tale of getting to this point is as interesting as the premise for the film itself.
According to an lengthy report on the movie’s history from The Hollywood Reporter, production on THE EVIL WITHIN began in 2002 from writer/director Andrew Getty, the grandson of J. Paul Getty, who obsessed and spent the last 15 years, and an estimated $4-6 million of his fortune, continually working on and tweaking the film.
THE EVIL WITHIN is the sadistic tale of a lonely, mentally handicapped boy who befriends his reflection in an antique mirror. This demonic creature orders him to go on a murderous rampage to kill the people he loves most.
Sadly, Getty passed away at the age of 47 before he could see the completion of his passion project.
“Essentially, I’m playing Andrew,” lead actor Fred Koehler, who stars as the boy, told The Hollywood Reporter. “When he talked about the construction of the script, he would often say that a lot of the content came from his own personal dreams. He was battling with a lot of demons.”
Regarding the completion and release of the film, producer Michael Luceri said, “After Andrew died, I made it my mission to see that his film was completed. I have been on this project from the beginning. Andrew was such a perfectionist, each and every shot had to be perfect before he would move on. When he was young, Andrew told me that he would have these really powerful, twisted dreams, so scary that he didn’t want to believe they came from inside him, so he had this idea that it was this ’storyteller’ who created the dreams, and that became the genesis of the film’s story.”
