Of the hundreds upon hundreds of movies that Roger Corman has produced, I’m amazed that DEATH RACE 2000 is the one that spawned a franchise! It started with Paul Bartel’s 1975 film, starring a young Sylvester Stallone at the very beginning of his career. (And yes, Bartel, as in the actor you always see paired up with Mary Woronov!) Then in 2008, writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson polished off the cult classic and turned it simply into DEATH RACE, fronted by Jason Statham. That has produced 2 more sequels, and now we’ve got another one on the horizon.
G.J. Echternkamp helms the latest movie in the franchise, DEATH RACE 2050, which arrives on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital HD on January 17 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. We’ve got an exclusive clip for you from the movie, but before that, check out the trailer to get a taste of the lunacy you can expect!
And now…. another sneak peek at one of the scenes from this thing:
Filled with full-throttle mayhem and black-hearted humor, Roger Corman’s Death Race 2050 takes place in the not-too-distant future where America is controlled by an all-powerful corporate government that keeps the masses placated with violent virtual-reality entertainment. The event of the year is the Death Race, where a motley assortment of drivers compete in a cross-country road race, scoring points for running down pedestrians and killing each other. The reigning champion and popular favorite is half-man, half-machine Frankenstein — but little does he know he’s taken on a rebel spy as his co-pilot.
This all-new film stars Manu Bennett (The Hobbit franchise) as Frankenstein and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) as the Chairman, as well as Burt Grinstead (“NCIS”), Marci Miller (Viper), Folake Olowofoyeku (The Beaver), Anessa Ramsey (Footloose), Yancy Butler (Hard Target) and Charlie Farrell (Cantar).
