A Look At How Spectral Motion Brought To Life STRANGER THINGS Demogorgon

I loved STRANGER THINGS. And considering we’re still talking about it months after it’s Netflix debut last summer, it’s safe to say I’m not alone in that love!

As horror fans, one of the coolest things introduced in the mini-series was the “demogorgon,” a bizarre and deadly creature from the “upside down” world, named after a powerful demon prince from the DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game. It’s basically the stuff of pure nightmares. (Or for us regular horror folk, just a really cool looking monster!)

Some may have thought that the majority of the creature was created via CGI, but in actuality, Spectral Motion – the FX company responsible for the characters seen in Guillermo del Toro’s HELLBOY movies, ATTACK THE BLOCK, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, LOOPER and many more were the ones that worked their magic to bring the demogorgon to life, practically.

Performer Mark Steger was the man in the monster suit. He has vast resume of work both in front of the camera for movies and through various performance art events and concerts. I remember seeing him on TOOL’s “Lateralus” tour! (Seriously, this guy is amazing. Watch his reel here.) Below, you’ll find a cool video from the fine fiends over at Midnight Pulp specifically about Steger as the demogorgon. Check it out:

Meanwhile, the Spectral Motion Facebook page recently shared an equally as cool video of an animatronic movement test for the demogorgon’s head.

Again, nightmare fuel. If you want to see some cool behind-the-scenes pics of Mark Steger in the demogorgon costume, hit up Spectral Motion’s Facebook page and skim through their photos!
