I head to Netflix for recent releases, and I go to HULU for my TV fix. But I love hunting on Amazon Prime for unexpected titles that I don’t find on other platforms. This week, I’ve curated a list of 10 fantastic cult films. Some are horror, some are quirky comedy, and some are difficult to wedge into a genre, but all could definitely be classified as “cult”, and they are all currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
THE HARDER THEY COME (1972)
This Jamaican-made flick follows a young man as he battles crime and drug dealers in hopes of becoming a famous reggae singer. The soundtrack is terrific!
SOUTHBOUND is a cleverly woven anthology horror movie about travelers on a stretch of desert highway.
This documentary explores the truth behind the Long Island legend of boogeyman Cropsey, as well as the different stories that have evolved over time.
COFFEE AND CIGARETTES (2003)
Arty cult film legend Jim Jarmusch directs a series of vignettes set in a café. Iconic cast members include Bill Murray, Tom Waits, RZA, GZA, Kate Blanchett, Iggy Pop, and many other familiar faces.
KENTUCKY FRIED MOVIE (1977)
One of John Landis’s first movies, the film is a series of hilarious vignettes, commercials, and spoofs.
PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959)
PLAN 9 is an Ed Wood classic, often dubbed one of the worst movies ever made, and even “so bad, it’s good”. Aliens cause the dead to rise from their graves in a convoluted plot to take over Earth.
FEMALE WEREWOLF (2015)
Suffering from sexual delirium, a young woman becomes convinced that she may be a werewolf. This Chris Alexander production is a slow-burn feast for the eyes. Love Jean Rollin? This is your jam.
AIRPLANE II: THE SEQUEL (1982)
The same cast and spoofy hilarity as the first film, but this time they are on a ship headed to the moon.
TEX MONTANA WILL SURVIVE! (2016)
This is the latest flick from Jeremy Gardner, the guy behind the awesome indie zombie film THE BATTERY. Tex Montana, the host of a fake survival show, sets out to prove that he really can survive in the wilderness. The film is also available on YouTube in its entirety courtesy of the filmmakers.
REEFER MADNESS: THE MOVIE MUSICAL (2005)
This is a smart, satirical look at the absurd drug propaganda films that pokes fun at the original REEFER MADNESS. And don’t worry if you’re not a musical fan. The movie lovingly makes fun of them as well. Even Jesus sings a show tune.
