Check Out The Long-Lost Michael Jackson Video Directed By Mick Garris & Written By Stephen King!

When it comes to long form music videos, no one has quite topped the mega event that was Michael Jackson’s THRILLER. Directed by John Landis with FX by Rick Baker, THRILLER remains to this day not only one of the greatest music videos of all time, but one of the great horror short films too! How would the King Of Pop follow that up?

Originally, in 1993, Jackson recruited director Mick Garris and the “king of horror” Stephen King to come up with an ambitious long form video titled “IS IT SCARY?” intended to coincide with the release of ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES. After contract disputes, the song ended up not appearing on the soundtrack, and was completed years later as Michael Jackson’s GHOSTS under the direction of famed FX legend Stan Winston!

That short was thought to be lost long ago, but it’s recently resurfaced on You Tube. Here’s what Mick Garris had to say (via his Facebook page) about the recently uncovered footage intended to be Michael Jackson’s “IS IT SCARY?”

“This was a REALLY rough early cut we did when I was directing this Michael Jackson film when it was called IS THIS SCARY? (Three years later, it was greatly expanded and retitled “Michael Jackson’s GHOSTS”.) It was before we ever got to the intended songs, as we never shot those. It was originally planned as promotion for ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES. Stan Winston was in charge of the makeup and visual effects, and took over as director when I went off to make THE SHINING. I have no idea how this got out, but it’s fascinating to revisit it all these years later. It became, and remains, by far the most expensive music video ever made. The original script was by Stephen King.”
